Sedona Arizona Travel Guide

Sedona, Arizona is a town you have probably heard of, but have wondered what makes it so popular? It’s small in population at about 10,000 residents, but Sedona is large in natural beauty and is truly artists’ territory.

Many visitors drive to Sedona, but if you would prefer you can fly commercially into Flagstaff Pulliam Airport (FLG), about 25 miles north of Sedona. Sedona Airport (FAA: SEZ; IATA: SDX) is available for private and charter planes. Choosing your Sedona AZ hotel is fun, as you can select from discount hotels all the way up to fabulous spa resorts.

Cathedral Rock Sedona AZ USOver the years, Sedona has evolved into a true destination spot, known for amazing Red Rock Country, bursting with color and beautiful sandstone formations. Sunrises and sunsets can be truly spectacular, boasting breathtaking oranges and reds. A great way to get acquainted with all Sedona offers is to hop aboard the Sedona Trolley for one of its tours. Area tours are plentiful, including helicopter, jeep, hot-air balloon and chartered airplane – or just hop in your car and begin exploring!

Considered a spiritual center, many visitors head to Sedona to relax and renew. You can visit 4 “vortexes”, thought to provide positive energy. Cathedral Rock is a “must-see”, one of those iconic photo ops you shouldn’t miss; Boynton Canyon boasts a really popular hiking trail, and Bell Rock is a nice place to sit and meditate. Along with the vortexes, other popular natural sites include Devil’s Kitchen Sinkhole and Devil’s Bridge.

Just north of Sedona is Oak Creek Canyon, which many consider to be a mini version of the Grand Canyon. In addition to grand, multi-colored cliffs, you can fish for trout in sparkling streams, follow trails upon horseback and hike through endless forest. An 88-mile loop from Sedona to Flagstaff is a wonderful scenic drive; don’t miss Oak Creek Canyon Vista Point, as it gives you incredible views.

A couple National Monuments are located nearby: Montezuma Castle and Tuzigoot, each of which boast ancient multi-story cliff dwellings built by the Sinagua people. Chapel of the Holy Cross is built into a mesa and is one of Sedona’s most visited attractions. Grand Canyon National Park is about a two hour drive to the north – obviously well-worth your time! There are so many tours, by mule, bus, bicycle and your own two feet, of this stunning World Wonder – everybody should get to see it once in their lifetime!

Southwestern PotteryFor a great day trip, head to Jerome, Arizona, a town where many artistic types have chosen to live and create. You will be rewarded with some fabulous art galleries and shops! Flagstaff is close by, and the attractions in and around this larger city are numerous, including Lowell Observatory for stargazing, Arizona Snowbowl for snow skiing and panoramic vistas, and the Museum of Northern Arizona’s fabulous Arts and Culture festivals held throughout the year.

For more annual fests and incredible art galleries and boutique shops, Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village in Upper Sedona is a simply lovely outdoor shopping area. Every September the center hosts Fiesta del Tlaquepaque, a celebration of Mexican Independence Day. October’s great weather brings many festivals to Sedona, including the Sedona Arts Festival, where 150 artists gather to showcase their amazing productions, and the Sedona Plein Air Festival, which attracts award-winning artists from all over the country – you can learn more about the ins and outs of painting outdoors. Another October event is Sedona Jazz on the Rocks, held at the classy Sedona Golf Resort which receives a 4-star rating from Golf Digest.

In June, the annual PhotoFest invites Master Photographers to Sedona for talks and workshops along with a juried photo competition. Are you visiting in July? Don’t miss the National Day of the Cowboy Celebration, a yearly Sedona Main Street offering – bbq and yeehaw! All summer long you can attend all kinds of live music at venues throughout Sedona, offered by Red Rocks Music Festival.

Everywhere you turn there is a more stunning view than the one you just had – it’s no wonder so many movies have been filmed in the area! Sedona is just a wonderful place to visit, spurring your imagination, your spirit and your creativity. Begin your planning today!
